Teachers:
Dan Amores is easily regarded as Canada's top swing dance leader, instructor
and DJ. He is an articulate instructor, a natural performer and competitor
rolled into one. Dan's dance philosophy stresses musicality and momentum, with
special attention to the communication between lead and follow. Incredibly
versatile, with a wide dance range spanning from raw to lyrical, Dan never fails
to make his follower feel like she is the best one out there (and never fails to
take other leaders to school).
Tony Lucido is a true tango junkie, dancing and learning tango for the past 8 years with some of the best dancers the world has to offer. He spent 2 years in Buenos Aires learning tango, 3 years honing his skills in the fertile Munich tango scene, and over the last 2 years his dance has been wonderfully corrupted by the sultry blues music and lovely friends he has found in Atlanta. While Tony's style of dance manifests a unique goulash of multicultural influences, there is a definite Southern Fried Swing to it these days. Tony's goal when dancing is to make his partner laugh with delight, and he enjoys having the opportunity to teach that desire to others.
Mike the Girl is known for both her love of connection and for her strange
name. Her dancing was born and raised in Knoxville, but in 2006 she moved to
Atlanta to pursue a dual career as mad scientist and dance junkie, before
converting to a full time danceaholic in 2007. She delights in exploring Lindy,
Blues, Tango, Charleston, and Balboa . She has performed and taught from one
coast to the other, and she regularly enjoys competitions as an excuse to social
dance when everyone else decides to sit down.
Clint Rauscher and Lena Hrybok have been dancing Argentine Tango together
since 2001. They dance and teach both Nuevo and traditional tango and are
founding members of an Atlanta tango social group, Tango Evolution. They have
taught in the US and Europe and love sharing their knowledge of tango dance and
music. While we're sorry to say that Lena Hrybok will be unable to make it, we're pleased to welcome Margret Fredrick from Chattanooga, TN. Margaret has been dancing in one capacity or another most of her life; however, it was in the summer of 2000 that she encountered both Argentine Tango and Lindy Hop -- at the same time! Since then, she has blazed a beaten path between Chattanooga and Atlanta (as well as a number of other regional venues) to hone her craft with all the fabulous instructors there, dancing mostly tango, but stopping occasionally to dance the Blues and hop to the Lindy beat! While tango and blues/lindy have her heart, she is also a big fan of vintage waltzing and has worked with Richard Powers for the past eight years, helping with his annual (and many times bi-annual) workshop weekends at the now former Split Tree Participatory Arts Center. For a number of years, she has worked to bring tango to Chattanooga through workshops with visiting instructors -- this year, spreading her wings a bit through teaching. Her dance shoes don't get used as much as she would like, but hopefully that
will change when she moves to the big city of Philadelphia mid-June.
Michael & Jaya have played a nurturing role in the Southeast for the last six years, prolifically teaching, organizing, and devoting themselves to the growth of the Lindy Hop community. In addition to organizing Lindy Focus (1-6), Sugar Foot Stomp, and Southern Belle Swing Bash (1-3), they have taught workshops throughout the region including Orlando, Atlanta, Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Charleston, Greenville, Asheville, Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Blacksburg, Pittsburgh, and most recently San Francisco and Sacramento. They have attended and led multiple regional teacher training seminars, and have sought relentlessly to spread awareness of Lindy Hop and to cultivate its tradition and technique. Together and separately they have helped to facilitate and judge a variety of contests of every style associated with the Lindy Hop world.
Heather began listening to blues music in the womb, thanks to a mother with
excellent taste. Unfortunately for her mother, that's also when she began
dancing to it. She is an unpublicized member of the Justice League of America
who honed her craft in a Tibetan monastery before joining the [redacted] in
their fight against [redacted]. When she's not studying, she knits. While
listening to music, of course. |
