WARNING: In Knoxville's ongoing attempts to thwart effective
throughput and earn placement in the Guinness Book of World Records for "Longest
ongoing construction project", a section of I-40 is CLOSED (between James
White Parkway and Hall of Fame Drive). This
information has not pervaded the web yet. Do not trust Google Maps or
other mapping software; follow the directions below (the directions will be
included in the guest booklet you receive on arrival, but the maps will not).
To Flynn Dance Center from I-40E (from points west):
Do NOT take "Detour I-40"; remain on regular I-40 towards downtown. Take the
17th St. exit (exit 387). The exit ramp will put you onto Dale Ave. with a
chemical plant on your right. Continue across 17th street at the stop light,
then get in the right lane. When the road forks, take the right fork onto
Blackstock Ave. After passing under the bridge, take a diagonal left on Heins
St. The FDC is at the end of Heins street where it intersects Tulip Ave.
To Flynn Dance Center from I-40W (from points east):
Take "Detour I-40" to I-275 (south), then follow directions for southbound
travelers below.
To Flynn Dance Center from I-75S (from points north):
At the intersection of I-75 and I-275, take I-275 (south) into Knoxville.
Continue until I-275S intersects I-40 and take the I-40W exit (note: I-40W exits
to the left). Be in the right lane as you merge onto I-40W. Take exit 387 (17th
St.) and follow the directions above for I-40W.
From Flynn Dance Center to Cumberland Avenue restaurants:
Leave FDC via Tulip St. Turn left on Blackstock Ave. Turn Right on Oak Ave. Turn
Right on Broadway which immediately becomes Henley St. Turn right on Cumberland
Ave. Go under a railroad underpass, continue uphill under two pedestrian
bridges. Most restaurants are past 17th street ,which is at the top of the hill.
(To get to the Golden Roast, which serves the best coffee in town, turn into the
Krystal parking lot just past 17th street. Golden Roast is on the corner of
Melrose/17th St and Lake Avenue, in the building behind Days Inn.)
From Cumberland Ave restaurants to Flynn Dance Center:
Head east on Cumberland Ave. Turn left on 16th St. and continue until 16th St.
ends. Turn left on Grand Ave. Turn right onto 17th St. Turn right onto Dale Ave
and follow any of the FDC arrival directions above. (If leaving from Golden
Roast, continue down Lake Ave until you can turn right, go one block to 17th St.
and turn right again, and follow the directions above.)
From Flynn Dance Center to Market Square:
Leave FDC via Tulip St. Turn left on Blackstock Ave. Turn Right on Oak Ave. Turn
Right on Broadway which immediately becomes Henley St. Turn left onto Church
Ave. and go two blocks. Turn left onto Walnut St and go two blocks. Cross Union
Ave. and look for a parking garage on the right. Parking is free on weekends and
evenings. Park in the garage. Walk out of the garage at the north end (you
entered on the west side of the garage), turn right, and walk down Wall St.
Market Square will be on your right in one block.
From Market Square to Flynn Dance Center:
Exit the parking garage with a left turn on Wall St. Turn right on Walnut and
get in the left lane. Turn left on Summit Hill Dr. and get in the right lane.
Turn right on Henley St. which immediately becomes Broadway. Take a diagonal
left turn onto Oak Ave. Turn left on Blackstock Ave. Turn right onto Tulip St.
FDC is at the end of Tulip St.
